Notes
The fool-proof diaper cover was invented by Marion O'Brien Donovan of South Bend, Indiana. It was patented in the late 1940s and went on sale to the public in 1949. The diaper consisted of a parachute fabric cover into which a conventional cloth diaper was inserted. This eliminated the problem of soggy diapers and was considered the forerunner of the disposable diaper.

Historical Background
Marion O'Brien Donovan was the daughter of Miles W. O'Brien, the co-founder of South Bend Lathe Company in South Bend, Indiana. She invented the diaper in 1946 for her own children. The first diaper was manufactured from her home. In 1950 she sold the invention patent rights for $1 million to concentrate on other inventions, one of which was the dental loop, a form of dental floss. Before becoming a mother and inventor, Marion worked for Harper's Bazaar in New York City. She died at the age of 81 in 1998 in New York.
