|Image Notes||The log chapel by St. Mary's Lake stands on the site of the first building on the University of Notre Dame campus. The present building was erected in 1906 to replace the original chapel built in 1831 which burned in 1856. William Arnett, a former slave who could build with logs, was brought from Kentucky to construct the replica. The log chapel of 1 1/2 stories took ten days to construct and measures 20 by 40 ft. There is a huge painting in the front by Paul Wood that depicts Father DeSeille celebrating a mass for a group of Native Americans. Knute Rockne was baptized as a Catholic in this chapel in 1925 by Rev. Vincent Mooney. From the South Bend Daily Times 3/1/1898 and a South Bend Tribune article 5/2/54. See location below.|

Additional Information & Sources
|Historical Background||The original log chapel was built in 1831 by Rev. Stephen Badin. CSC, who is still buried in the current log chapel on campus.
The book, "Chronicles of Notre Dame du Lac" by Edward Sorin is a journal kept by Father Sorin describing a 25 year period in the early history of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Sorin's judgments of people and events are recorded with a blunt frankness, including his conflicts with various bishops.
