Image Notes This picture shows Niles, Michigan native Ring Lardner towards the end his life. Well-known for his writings about baseball, Ring wrote a very famous epitaph about the pitcher, Christy Mathewson who was injured in a freak accident during World War I and died one year later. The epitaph reads: My eyes are very misty As I pen these lines to Christy; O, my heart is full of heaviness today, May the flowers ne'er wither, Matty, On your grave at Cincinnati, Which you've chosen for your final fade-away. From "The Best of Baseball" published in 1956 by Baseball Magazine. The fade-away was Mathewson's best pitch.
