||The original American Trust Company building at Michigan and Washington streets in South Bend, Indiana, which opened in 1904. In 1924 a new building was erected on the same site.

||American Trust Company opened for business on March 28, 1904. Col. C.A. Carlisle was the first president. The first customer was the president's son, and the first borrower was the University of Notre Dame, which obtained a loan of $15,000. At the 25th annual meeting, president E.H. Miller reported 1928 as a prosperous year. American Trust closed its doors during the early years of the Depression, but reopened on July 16, 1935. American Trust Company opened a new building in 1970 on the corner of Main and Washington streets in South Bend. On September 9, 1968, the bank opened as American National Bank & Trust Co. after being bought out and renamed. Valley Bank purchased the assets of American National Bank in 1983. Their assets, nearly equal in size, produced a new bank, Valley American, with assets of $300,000,000. Valley American Bank was acquired by National City Bank in 1999. In 2008 National City Bank was taken over by PNC Bank and remains in South Bend.
