Additional Information & Sources

Historical Background John R. Kissinger, former resident of South Bend, was one of 18 men in the regular army who in 1900 volunteered to become victims of the yellow fever carrying mosquito in order to test theories that the disease was caused by this insect. Kissinger became ill with yellow fever and was ill for 8 days during which medical doctors learned more about the disease then in the previous eight years. He recovered and was discharged in 1901.

He moved to South Bend after the war and lived on Milton and Miami Streets. In 1906 he collapsed on the street and was unable to use his legs for 13 years due to the after-effects of the yellow fever virus.

He was awarded a gold medal and a pension.
